I’ve got a double case of the I’m hungries happening over here. For the first time in a long time, both Lola and Malone are going through growth spurts at the same time. I can’t keep up with them! It isn’t thirty minutes after a meal before someone is asking for a snack again. I’ve got a case of constantly hungry kids!
Tips For Feeding Constantly Hungry Kids
- Find the root of the reason. I am a recovering emotional eater. This is something I’m working hard not to pass on to my kids. If my kids are asking for a snack because they’re bored, I want them to find a different activity to entertain themselves with.
- Go with the flow. Right now, we’re in the middle of a growth spurt for both kids. We’ve really got no choice but to embrace it and feed them. What worked for their nutrition last week, doesn’t work this week.
- Hydrate first. There are times when I know my children are not hungry, they are thirsty. Little ones often know they need something in their bellies and automatically think it is food they need. I know this to be true of myself too.
- Choose wholesome snacks.
Choosing a wholesome snack has probably been the biggest game changer for us in terms of dealing with constantly hungry kids. Both kids would prefer ice cream or a popcicle in the afternoon. I get it, we’re in the dog days of summer and they want something cool and refreshing. I can’t say that I blame them. But instead of giving them empty calories, I’ve been loading the best alternative, yogurt or yogurt based smoothies.
We like to get our Yoplait® yogurt at Walmart because they’ve always got an awesome variety. We love the Original, but sometimes opt for Light, Greek or Gogurt® depending on our mood (and room in the fridge).
The kids love yogurt in just about any shape or flavor, but have a special penchant for the dessert looking flavors. Today after her afternoon nap, Lola woke up hungry and asking for treats. It didn’t matter to her that she had a banana, a turkey and cheese sandwich and broccoli at lunch. She was starving.
I gave her this and pointed out that it was “pie.” She was delighted.
I was delighted too, because I knew it would keep her full until dinner time.
Post dinnertime was a whole new ballgame. 30 minutes after supper, she was hungry again!
What is your favorite flavor of Yoplait® yogurt?
