Today’s conversation about chores for 6 to 8 year olds has been brought to you today by Downy Wrinkle Releaser Plus. All opinions and content are my own.
One of the things I love about having a motherhood mission statement is that it constantly drives me back to the big picture goals I have for my family. It it is a great touch point, especially since there are times when life and motherhood leave me not knowing which way is up at the end of the day.
This is my motherhood mission statement:
My goal as a mother is to raise empathetic, self sufficient, open minded tiny humans who love the world and their neighbors as themselves.
Malone is in elementary school now. In my heart of hearts, I know that it won’t be long before he’s off to college and will be trying to figure out the art of adulting. I don’t know who said it first, but this year – now more than ever – the phrase, “The days are long but the years are short,” really resonates with me. I am going to blink, and my kids are going to be grown ups.
Chores for 6 to 8 Year Olds
Because I want my kids to become grown ups who do not live in filth nor bring their laundry home to mom, we’ve started to to introduce the concept of household chores to Malone. These are things we do – not because we love doing them, but because they help our family. They’re things that, like them or not, they need to get done.
I’ve been blown away by Malone’s response and eagerness to learn and help. He is especially fond of vacuuming… I think it is because the hose looks like a weapon. But honestly, I’m okay with that.
He’s also started to take responsibility for the care of his clothing. Taking clothes out of the dryer and matching socks isn’t as exciting to him as using the vacuum cleaner.
But using Downy Wrinkle Releaser Plus to get the wrinkles out has been deemed fun.
I recently discovered that our mornings go a lot smoother if we get our clothing ready for the next day as soon as we get home from school. Malone is in charge of picking out his clothing and making sure they’re wrinkle free + ready for morning. The steps for using Downy Wrinkle Releaser Plus are easy… spray, tug, smooth and hang.
In addition to these two chores, Malone has a few other things on his to do list. I don’t expect every him to vacuum or sweep everyday, but I expect everything else to be taken care of. He’s the kind of kid who is really motivated by a box to check off, so I made an after-school chore chart for him.
